Energy Ministry: Crypto miners use less than 1% of power in 2022

MOSCOW, Feb 28 (PRIME) -- Electricity consumption by Russian cryptocurrency miners accounted for 0.6–0.8% of the total in 2022, Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Snikkars said on Tuesday in the ministry’s Telegram post.

“It fell short of the forecast,” Snikkars said.

In December, he predicted that the miners would account for 1.5–2% of electricity consumption rising from 1% in 2021.

Snikkars said that in the absence of legislative regulation of this business almost the whole loading was focused in Siberia – in the energy systems of the Irkutsk Region, the republic of Buryatia and Baikal region threatening other projects of industrial development.
